Calendars

In this assignment, I was asked to create a calendar for the Humane Society to distribute for profit. Below is a preview of the calendar with the months October, November, and December.

In this project, I looked at almost all of the design elements and looked at which ones I wanted to incorporate with this calendar. As I continued to look at each element, I realized that I would not be able to decide on this until after I had the calendar layout decided. When I began to design my layout on the master page, tons of ideas came to me pertaining to the colors, the text fonts, and other aspects of this project. I knew that first of all I wanted to have repetition throughout the three months. I liked the way that the consistency looked throughout the three pages. After you looked at the first month, you knew exactly where to find the coupons, fun facts, and the cute animal pictures on the next two months. I also made sure that as I made the layout on each page, that the repetition was precise and the alignment was the same. All calendars were about the same size and started at the same point. One thing I wanted to make sure I did as I created this calendar was that I used at least two animals that people wouldn’t usually think of adopting, but are available for adoption.

When I started to input colors, I was thinking about what colors made people happy or put them in a good mood. I immediately thought about the color pink and that is what I put as the overall background. I used a gradient swatch of a light pink and white because I did not think a glaring, hot pink would appeal to anyone but little children. I put a tallow stroke around the text box that contained the fun facts about each animal that was pictured on that month. I used a yellow, not only because it was a happy color, but because it made the box stand out and that would be one of the first things that you would read by just looking at it. I was also able to use the table design features a lot when it came to adjusting the actual calendar dates. I wanted to put lines on the columns and rows so that the readability of the calendar wouldn’t be an issue.

I think that this color and my calendar design, or gradient swatch, appeals to people of all ages because it generally makes people happy. The color pink is a soft color that usually correlates with happy times and seeing a cute picture of an animal always makes somebody smile. The happier people are looking at these pictures, the more likely they are going to want to go out and get that specific animal.
